This week is the first week of 60 lessons a group of photographers and I are going through in our book study of The Visual Toolbox by David Duchemin. If you’r not familiar with David Duchemin and you are a photographer get familiar!
Lesson one revolves around finding your voice by assessing your top 10 images and picking out common themes among them. This task was way harder then I though as I struggled between the idea of just using personal images or just using client images. I know my strongest images are the ones of my sons, I also know that my favourite images are the ones of my sons (or family) because of the emotional connection I have to the people in the images, but I also know that I am way more playful and experimental when photographing my kids therefore I have had the freedom and no time constraints to do so resulting in some pretty special images. I also have to say that I have at least 50 favourite images that I personally feel are amazing. Why I choose these ones? It’s how I felt today really. I do see common threads in them and so they are the ones that I have chosen to post
So these are my top 10 from the past 2 years in no particular order. Common themes include: lines, composition, subject placement, emotion, colour, there’s definitely a balance of stillness and playfulness amongst the set too.
Every year that goes by I realized my strength is in portraiture. Analyzing my images lately between this exercise and finding images to submit to the Professional Photographers of Canada has really solidified the idea that although I love editorial/photojournalistic imagery, I create some pretty special portraits 🙂
