If you asked me as a child “what do you want to be when you grow up” I would have quickly answered “an artist”. My mom never said to me “yeah, but what else? because being an artist unrealistic”. Bless her.
However, as all children with ambitious ideas do, I grew up and realized that being an artist is not going to pay the rent and I had to hone other skills to get the job done (I use puns a lot). As the years went by I often grew restless at my jobs and, dare I admit, created trouble that eventually lead to me moving on to a new places of employment. So when I felt the itch to jump ship at my last place of employment I decided it was time to upgrade my education instead of bouncing from crappy office job to crappy office job, and so looked into part-time courses to take at my local college.
In all honesty, I applied for the photography course with a “well this could be fun” attitude along with a few other courses that were business oriented. When I got accepted into all of them, and actually had to choose I sat down with my heart and decided that the worst thing that was going to happen was I was going to waste money on learning about something that I had fallen in love with, and that Business 101 would be waiting there for me if I did.
I want to preface what I am about to say with “I love what I do”
Five years later I am still in love but, like any job, there are days that I just want to sit on my couch and watch bad movies instead of picking up my DSLR. There are days I feel like I have been using the same props, backdrops and my antics seem less then genuine. Perhaps it’s just “the way I am” but there are times I just want a change. Fortunately, this time around it’s not in career as being a photographer and skilled at photoshop leaves many many doors open for change within my industry.
Many photographers experience “down time” after the Christmas portrait rush and this year I decided that I wanted to get back in touch with my creative side. It started with a few self portraits, and has snowballed into fun images of my sons. I have big plans for future images and would love to find clients who love what I am doing and want the same for their kids…because I have ideas that go beyond 2 month and 2 year old boys. I am also totally open to hearing ideas and working together to create works of art for your walls.
