This Fall it will be 8 years since I started learning the art of photography. There is a common sentiment in the fine art community (or maybe just among photographers) that you don’t actually start to master your craft until you have been practicing for 10 years. I can say wholeheartedly that I feel this to be true and in this ever-changing technical day and age I question if 10 years is even long enough. I want to go into a longer verse about how amazing this journey has been and how precious every image is to me and that I don’t take any of it for granted, but I will for another post.
This blog is somewhat about accountability as over the past 2 weeks I have gone through 3 years worth of images and created a few new images in which to submit to the Professional Photographers of Canada to be judged in hopes that I will gain my accreditation in Child and Infant Portraiture.
This is my first attempt at gaining accreditation and I am so nervous/anxious/overwhelmed/excited to hear what the judges have to say. The following are the guidelines I must follow:
I must submit ten images of ten different children (12 and under) in ten different poses from ten different photo sessions, and have enough variety in the submission to show the photographer’s creative and technical ability. A variety of head and shoulders, 3/4 and full-length poses must be shown. Singles, Infants (new born) and groups (2 or more people) must be represented and may include environmental images.
Going through my images to find my ten I realized how many rules I break when I am out having fun with my families. It’s been a real eye opener however, I am confidant in my skills (overly so perhaps) and going forward, will be paying much better attention the the little things…unless it’s a toddler session where I am happy to get one still image 😉
